I’ve been working on a new book for five years now.
And it’s not about usability or UX.
It’s about writing.
I’ve never made any secret about the fact that I find writing to be ridiculously hard work, and for me, a source of, well…agony is probably the best word. And I’ve been doing it for forty years.
And not being a big fan of agony, over the years I’ve slowly found some things that make writing easier (no, not alcohol), and produce better results—things I wish someone had told me back when I started out. And for five years now I’ve been trying to shape them into a book.
Of course, the problem is this is writing.
I don’t have a due date. When people ask, I just say I’m hoping to get it done while I still have enough brain cells left to do it.
Are you still working on your book about writing a book? (odd sentence, but there it is)
As you can see by how long it took me to reply, I’m not the sort of person who generally manages to stay on top of things. 🙂 But I honestly am still working on writing the book about writing. (It’s been almost six years now since I started sending myself emails with notes about it.)
Like most people, I’ve been sidetracked a lot in the last two years (starting with our election here in the US), but I’m back on the wagon now, and hoping to make some actual progress. We’ll see.
Thanks for asking, Kevin.
Hi from New Zealand! Can’t wait for when your book on writing comes out. How can I make sure I don’t miss the launch?
Assuming I ever finally get it done…. The easiest way to get word would be to follow me on Twitter (@skrug). It’s pretty painless, because I deliberately don’t tweet very often.
…and I’m delighted to hear you’re interested. When you’re writing, you need all the encouragement you can get.
Keep on writing, Steve! I’d love to read it
Thanks, Grant. As I like to tell people, I’d love to read it too. 😊
Hi, Steve,
I just wanted to keep the encouragement coming your way. Periodically, I check in to get an update on your book about writing. Please know, whenever you finish, it will be well worth the wait.
Thank you for teaching us!
As 2022 ends, we (me for one) request that you set up a “pre – order” for your ~~ book about writing a book ~~.
You see that I need it.
Happy New Year.
Thanks for the encouragement, Fred. I only wish I was close enough to being done to justify preordering! But I’m still at it, and hopefully one of these days….
Hi Steve,
I hope you’re keeping well. And I hope your writing is progressing at a pace you’re happy with.
I won’t ask about ordering, dates, prices. Just to say, like Amy, we’re all sending you encouragement. When it is ready, there’ll be plenty of people interested to read it. Me included.
Best wishes and good vibes.
I took a psychology course in college, so I’m telling you NOT to finish the book, Steve. DON”T DO IT. EVER! Just give up…
(Anyone who took a psychology class, please: shhhh…it’s reverse psychology. Now he’ll prove to this “naysayer” that he CAN do it and get it done.)
Any update? Would love to include your latest masterpiece in my teaching materials to students.
Thanks!
No update at this point. Work on it has been delayed by various things (you know: life), but I’m hoping to get back at it full tilt before too long. I’d really love to get it done.
Thanks for the encouragement! Every little bit helps.
